Toddlers and a Newborn
Some toddlers may express some jealousy when you bring home a new baby, therefore you must ensure the safety of your newborn. Make sure you never leave the newborn within the reach of the toddler. And though the toddler may not act out of jealousy, she may try to pick your newborn up, feed him or even sit on him. She could drop the baby or she may unintentionally hurt the baby some other way.
Also, if there are feelings of jealousy from the toddler, those feelings, if not dealt with properly, can lead to temper tantrums. Make sure you take time out when you can for just you and your toddler. She still needs her one on one time with mommy, so when you can have daddy or another relative or friend take care of the baby while you spend time with your two year old.
Also, help reassure your toddler that the new baby doesn't replace your love for her, that you still love her and that you have enough love in your heart for both of you. You can also use expressions like, "We love you so much, we wanted to add to that love" and talk about family and explain that the new baby is part of your family. Explain to your toddler that they are the big brother or big sister to the new baby. Of course much of this can be done before the newborn arrives, so keep this in mind if you're expecting.
